The aspens stare at us
with faces full of eyes
their black arms outstretched
to warn and ward us from the stone

Animas perditos
that drives its way through rock
in green water and jade
unbroken on the rack

Rock fall and ice
shards of liquid crystal
that tear on rock swell
and curl in frantic spray

Water over cliff face
drawing rock to water
drawing water down with water
water drowning in the river
water driving water down

Rio Animas Perditos take me

down the rolling river
over broken stone
rocked in spray of ice shards
turned back against the flow
