Sarina Houston

Our newest columnest, Sarina Houston. Mrs. Houston will be penning “The Urban Muse.”

I’d like to think of myself as a muse, although I may not be very inspiring to some.   And I like to muse. So I’m selfishly stealing the title of Enid’s Unofficial Muse.   Appropriately, this column will be filled with- you guessed it- musings.  I will write about local people and places that I’ve found impressive.  I will try to highlight the people who work tirelessly to make our town great and satisfy Enid’s residents and tourists alike.  And occasionally, you might have to put up with my slightly off-topic musings.  And I’ll try to keep my articles about coffee to a minimum. (If you don’t already know, my life revolves around a little addictive drink called COFFEE.)

If you’re like me, then you appreciate an employee that works hard. I’m always really impressed when I witness someone pouring everything they have into their jobs.  I guess it’s not as common these days as it used to be, and I’ve come to accept that.  But customer service in most places today is less than great; as such, I am usually not surprised to see sheer laziness and an absolute lack of respect from employees.

On the contrary, it’s always a pleasant surprise to witness someone doing a job well done.  This is why I love living in a small(ish) town.  Businesses with owners and employees that don’t work hard usually don’t last long.  And word of mouth is powerful, right?

We’re all guilty of a little gossip.  We women discuss where we get our massages, our hair done and our nails done.  We even deliberate about the best place to get our dog’s hair and nails done.  We talk about our landscapers and our fitness instructors.  We converse about where we got our fabulous new jeans, and who has the best deals on chicken this week.  But it’s not just women.  Men are just as guilty.  Men gossip about the best wings in town, which golf course has the best green, and who thinks what about Obama.

Everywhere I go, people are talking.  So I thought I’d bring the conversation here.  Hence, The Urban Muse.

With this column, I will muse.  I will teach you about the hard workers and the fine places in Enid.  Whether it’s a new business or a company rich in northwest Oklahoma history, some people are working hard for Enid and my hope is for this column to be a forum used to spread the word and give the hard-working folks of Enid and the surrounding area a digital pat on the back.

Sarina Houston: Sarina comes to Enid after spending four years in the UK eating crumpets and jet-setting to Europe’s best vacation destinations. She has lived in 12 homes in six different states and two different countries. Somewhere along the way, she picked up a handsome military husband, two equally handsome little boys, a Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Science, and a knack for writing. When she isn’t writing articles or flying airplanes, she can be found battling ninja warriors, racing Hot Wheels, or picking bits of dried Play-Doh out of the carpet. She can’t stop drinking coffee and will sleep any chance she gets. Sarina is chasing careers in both aviation and journalism, and like everyone else, continues to seek the ultimate life balance.
