One of downtown Enid’s newest businesses is Wheat Capitol Running Company, owned and operated by Phillip West and managed by Enid resident Glenn McDaniel. McDaniel is also very active in the Enid Running Club, his goal being to get Enid active and fit. Oklahoma was listed as the sixth unhealthiest state in the country. “We can change that by changing our community. It’s more than just running. It’s just getting active,” he stated.
The Enid Running Club has grown consistently from year to year with a weekly group run, a weekly form/speed workout, and a monthly social run. “You can get involved and find someone that runs, or walks, at your pace. You will find someone to enjoy your time with,” said McDaniel.
Because of the increased interest in running and the growth of the running community in Enid, the store saw an opportunity to fill a niche that was otherwise being neglected. The shop offers everything from shoes to hydration packs. Anything a runner might need to get started or step up their training can be found at Wheat Capitol Running Co. And it’s not just for runners. McDaniel said, “The shoes can be used for walking, or simply a lifestyle option. A non-runner can just enjoy the comfort of our shoes. Running shoes tend to be lighter and more comfortable.”
When asked what sets them apart from other stores, he stated, “Some of our shoes can be found at other stores in Enid and the prices are comparable to the other stores, but we offer a true gait analysis to help determine the best shoe for the way you run. We offer special orders for shoes, clothes, nutrition, or therapy items. We offer form clinics to help you run more efficiently. Weekly group runs are provided to give you a support group that will keep running fun and keep you accountable to improving.”
McDaniel states they will be a part of local races and events and as a Main Street member, they will support all downtown events and be actively engaged in the community. “You can expect to see events that are targeted to women, men, kids, and the whole family. Group runs and educational events will be available to all.”
The second Tuesday of each month, the Enid Running Club hosts a social run from Callahan’s. The run starts at 6:00 p.m., followed by food and beverages. A local business sponsors the first round of drinks each month; the next one is scheduled for August 14th, with Wheat Capitol Running Co. sponsoring.
Everyone loves a good sale and they run specials quite frequently. This week if you buy a pair of running shorts, the second pair is 25% off.
Wheat Capitol Running Co. is located at 102 W. Randolph (in the bottom of the old Evans Building) and the phone number is 234-6900. They are open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursdays, and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Get off your butt and go check them out.
