Enid Roller GirlsOk.  Please bear with me Route 60 Nation.  This is my first official article covering roller derby.

I happily admit that 67.47% of the time, I had no real idea what the heck was going on as far as the rules.  Cut me some slack. There is one more home bout for the season and then, I will spend the off season familiarizing myself with the rule book.

There is one thing that I can tell you for 100% certain.  These girls are tough as nails.  Both squads exhibited what leads me to call this, without hesitation, a full contact sport.  People who find baseball boring, will love this sport.  Golf fans…probably not.  But if you like football or hockey, you will fall in love with the sport fairly quickly.  If you don’t, you either have no grasp of competition or you might need your head examined.  I suggest it’s probably both.

From the first whistles of the bout, there was action all over the track as both squads fought for points.  Name me one other sport where both offenses and both defenses are on the field of play at the same time?  I can’t name one.

Tulsa was off to an early lead, with the halftime score 63-52.  Enid rallied hard in the final period, leading at one point, but the Tulsa Beta Corps squad proved too much and won the bout 128-105.  I do want to point out the lead scorers for Enid, Kelly RipHer scored 37 points, followed very closely by Scream & Sugar with 36.  Nikki Sixx Killer scored 29 points.

Pete Ramos Photography, is the official photographer of the Enid Roller Girls.  He was kind enough to send me some of his great action shots from the bout.  I took some of my own, so you will see some of mine in the gallery below.  Pete’s are marked with his logo and ours have our logo on them.  Enjoy.  And remember!  There is still one home bout left at Skatetown, August 4th as they face the Red River Roller Derby.  Doors open at 6 and the bout starts at 7pm!  You can get your tickets from any roller girl in advance for $10 in advance or $12 at the door.  If you can’t find a roller girl, let me know and I will find you a roller girl.  They are among you….hiding in plain site.
