Enid Roller Girls: Ready for Last Home Bout Against Red River
The Enid Roller Girls are gearing up for their final home bout of the season.
The ERG are plenty pumped up for the finale as they will be doing a promotion with Grindhouse Tattoos downtown on Friday night. Hot dogs. Beer. OH! And the girls will be hiding tickets, so you can possibly get tickets for free by just showing up and finding them! Grindhouse Tattoo is located on Broadway across from The Felt Bird and next to PDQ Printing.
An aspect of the ERG that I probably have failed to mention up to now is the fact that they have just been accepted as an apprentice league in the WFTDA. WFTDA? Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. This is the international governing body for women’s flat track derby. They help set standards and rules across not only the nation, but the world. The WFTDA is governed by a 5 member, volunteer board of directors.
The association is truly international having leagues in Europe, Canada, and Australia. The London Rollergirls, in fact, just participated in the opening ceremony for the Olympics despite roller derby not being an Olympic sport. The good news is that they are petitioning to be included in the future as an Olympic sport.
According to ERG guru and leader, Jme Jawbreaker, “This will change who we play in the future a little bit.” They still are allowed to play against non-WFTDA teams, so some of the ERG’s rivalries will remain in place.
Another thing that I should expand on is the fact that with each bout, the Roller Girls donate money to local charities.
During the season, they have donated money to 4Our Kids, Growing Hope Network, Enid SPCA, Our Daily Bread, YWCA Girl Power Ralley, and in this final bout money will be donated to a fellow skater who moved to Oklahoma from Chicago. She was severely injured in a bout and this will help with her medical expenses. Her name is Tequila Mockingbird (which might be the coolest derby name I’ve heard so far). Let’s help the ERG pack the house to help her out!
The bout will be at Skatetown, Saturday August 4th. Doors open at 6 pm, but the bone crunching action starts at 7 pm. Tickets are available from any Enid Roller Girl or brownpapertickets.com. They are $10 in advance, $12 at the door and kids under 12 are free with a paid adult.
