ENID, OK (October 1, 2012) – The Enid Public Library is proud to introduce Diva, the newest member of the Enid Public Library.  Diva is a trained and licensed therapy dog who would love to spend some reading time with reluctant or emerging readers.  She will be available on Wednesdays beginning at 4 p.m. in the Great Plains meeting room.  Children will go one at a time to spend reading time with Diva, as time permits.

Reading to a dog is an excellent way to relax. Children realize their furry friend will not criticize them if they stumble over a new word. They know they won’t be judged if they don’t understand the meaning of a word and that the dog won’t laugh at them if they are reading quite slowly. When children relax and stop worrying, they can better read and practice more. The more they read, the better they become at reading. Therapy dogs, like Diva, can be instrumental in improving the literacy skills of children in an effective, unique and fun manner. Diva especially likes books about dogs but will listen with interest to any book.

ENID, OK (October 1, 2012) – The Enid Public Library welcomes children’s author Katy Kelly for a visit and book signing from 2-4 p.m. on October 6, 2012.

Kelly is the author of the Melonhead series of children’s books. The program will begin at 2 p.m. with Kelly speaking about her work at 2:30 p.m.

Kelly’s Melonhead and Lucy Rose series are based near the Capitol in Washington, D.C., where she herself grew up and still lives.  Melonhead is based on the author’s real-life brother, and his life is filled with antics that lead to disasters in his wake. As the author describes Melonhead on her website, “I start out with a small idea and think of ways to make it worse.”

In addition to writing children’s books, Kelly previously has worked as a feature writer for USA Today and an editor at U.S. News magazine.  The author will have copies of her books available at the event for purchase for cash only.
