I was going to write an article with all the super inspiring things that were imparted upon those of us who were lucky enough to attend today’s dedication of the official Oklahoma Vietnam Memorial. Instead, I find myself looking at the pictures and realizing they tell the story pretty well.
On Sunday night, the Woodring Wall of Honor paid tribute to their volunteers, honored 5 area veterans and winners of the youth patriotic poster/essay contest were announced and honored. In addition, City of Enid’s City Manager and former Navy Captain, Eric Benson was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The ceremony was held at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center, with a banquet held before the award ceremony. The keynote speaker was Colonel Leon “Lee” Ellis, former Hanoi Hilton POW and award winning author of the book “Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton.”
This Veteran’s Day Weekend in Enid will be different than most. In fact, this is quite possibly a historic moment for honoring our Veterans, not only in Enid, but Oklahoma. The events include a “Ride to Remember,” “The Legacy Awards Ceremony,” the long awaited dedication of the Vietnam Memorial Wall at Woodring Airport, a poker run, and a concert.
Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin and nationally recognized leadership expert Lee Ellis, who was a Vietnam POW for over five years along with Senator John McCain, will speak at the Veteran’s Park Wall Dedication at 11:00AM on Monday, November 11th located one mile south of Hwy 412 and 66th Street at the Woodring Airport in Enid, Oklahoma.

Enid Pride is Saturday, September 21st from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Government Springs Park. The key-note speaker will be Kelby Johnson, co-star of the recent documentary “Bully.”
Southard House Bed & Breakfast Inn will be hosting a benefit breakfast for Hunger Action Month 7:30-9 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 25 at Southard House. All proceeds will go to Loaves and Fishes.
